When this last batch of puppies arrived there was some discussion at the shelter about the primary breed influence, especially in the two tan pups. Chow came up, but all their tongues are 100% pink (a Chow mix will usually have a mixed pink/purple tongue). I, of course, thought Shar-pei, as that is a known breed on the Fort Peck Reservation. And when the pups were younger, those little flat ears seemed to fit.
But the ears have grown – together!
And what’s really funny is, they don’t stand up; they just pivot in and out a little. This puzzled me, until I was at the dog park the other day, and ran into a full grown Samoyed who had Satchel’s facial profile. And his ears! They stood up a little more than his, and it had been so long since I had seen a Samoyed that it never crossed my mind, especially when the ears were those stubby little things.
All of them went up for adoption a last week, and as usual I was quite sad to see them leave. I watched the Heart of the Valley web site and they were all adopted by early afternoon on the day they were listed. I hope they found excellent homes. I always imagine that they do.
