Squiggly and King

10-9-17 – These are the first pups to land here since Grace arrived, and when I see them, I suspect that Squiggly, the scruffy one, might be one of Grace’s puppies; she arrived with only two, and the litter was likely larger than that. But dog rescue, especially of strays, is not an organized affair, and separation is common within a dog family. After all, Bella and Jappy were rescued nine months apart from two different shelters, and the dna test confirmed that they are siblings.

When I bring these two into the yard, Grace immediately goes to Squiggly, and it seems apparent that they know each other: instant elevation in energy, immediate play, and from my human perspective, an attitude of appreciation at meeting again. King had not met Squiggly before their arrival, so they saw each other for the first time as they exited their crates. I don’t know if it is Grace’s positive energy or their own, but the two puppies immediately bond and together with my dogs, we begin yet another day of the play-sleep-play-sleep-play-sleep-play cycle until well after midnight.

I haven’t decided yet which part of that cycle I enjoy the most, but I’m leaning toward the sleep side. They are always adorable, and if they are near you, they naturally gravitate toward your body heat and snuggle up with complete satisfaction.

I have no idea what King’s history is, nor what kind of mix he might be. He’s the same age as Squiggly, so he’s going to be a small adult, but looks like part Labrador, with the facial contours of something like a small spaniel. He has wide, curious eyes, as if he is trying to learn everything about the world without judgment or fear.

10-12-17 – I am amazed and amused at Squiggly’s hilariously short memory. All the dogs have been out in the yard running and playing, wrestling, chewing on toys, and all of them are interacting with each other. Jappy runs into the house to get a drink, and comes out a minute later. When he appears on the deck, Squiggly goes into full alarm-bark mode, yipping and squealing as if she’d never seen this dog before and we all need to watch out! Jappy stands there, takes a deep breath, and sighs, with a facial expression that says, “Ah well, what can you do?

10-13-17 – A short stint for this cute couple. They are off to Heart of the Valley Shelter this morning. I will miss them. They were a lot of fun this week, but I must remember they are only here as a short stop on their way to Home.
